<\/a><\/p>\n\u201cThe cool thing about horses \u2013 they don\u2019t have prejudice.\u00a0 They don\u2019t care if you\u2019re tall or thin, dark or light, or if you\u2019re rich or poor.\u00a0 They don\u2019t care about that.\u00a0 They care about how you make them feel.\u201d \u2013 Buck Brannaman<\/i><\/p>\n
They say there are no coincidences.\u00a0 I believe that\u2019s true.<\/p>\n
Part of the reason I believe it is that just a week or so after I had the privilege of visiting psychotherapist Lesley Hannell and her beautiful horse Lizzie for a taste of horse therapy, the local library sent me an email to say that my request for the movie \u201cBuck\u201d had come through.<\/p>\n
\u201cBuck\u201d is a documentary about the legendary horseman Buck Brannaman.\u00a0 He became known as \u201cThe Horse Whisperer\u201d after working as a consultant on the film of the same name back in the 90\u2019s.\u00a0 (You may remember its star\u2026 a guy named Robert Redford.)<\/p>\n
Brannaman suffered through a tragic childhood.\u00a0 His mother died young.\u00a0 His father was an alcoholic who beat Buck and his brother unmercifully.\u00a0 Eventually, both children made their way into a loving foster home and began to rebuild their lives.\u00a0 Through his love of horses, Buck found a way out of his pain.\u00a0 He learned that if he could understand the way a horse thinks, he could help others to the do the same.<\/p>\n
“Abused horses are like abused children. They trust no one and expect the worst. But patience, leadership, compassion and firmness can help them overcome their pasts.\u201d \u2013 Buck Brannaman<\/i><\/p>\n
These words resonated with me.\u00a0 I think we can all agree that everyone has issues of one sort or another in their lives.\u00a0 But Brannaman models for us the truth that we can successfully overcome our pasts.\u00a0 And let\u2019s face it, he had quite a past to overcome.\u00a0 Buck says it\u2019s possible\u2026 and horses can show us the way.<\/p>\n
A few weeks ago, I had the chance to experience what Brannaman is talking about.\u00a0 It was a cold January afternoon at a pretty country stable just a short ride away from my house.\u00a0 Lesley and Lizzie were waiting for me.<\/p>\n
Lesley \u2013 inside the barn.\u00a0 Lizzie \u2013 a beautiful chestnut horse \u2013 was in the pasture hanging out with her friends in her heavy winter coat.<\/p>\n
Full disclosure here\u2026 I don\u2019t have lots of riding experience.\u00a0 But I do have a keen interest in the energy of the horse\u2026 the communication that takes place between an animal and a human – often without any words being spoken.<\/p>\n
Lesley asked if I had any issues I wanted to work on.\u00a0 It\u2019s the question she asks all of her clients before they begin.\u00a0 I thought about it for a few seconds, and said \u201cNo\u201d, but immediately wondered if there was something there I just wasn\u2019t admitting to\u2026 something I needed to work on but was blissfully unaware of.\u00a0 \u201cJust get started,\u201d I thought to myself.<\/p>\n
We began by walking Lizzie into the barn and into her stall.\u00a0 We took off her coat and I began to brush her body and her mane \u2026 being very quiet and still and doing my best to establish some trust and rapport with her. \u00a0 Then, it was time to lead her into the arena to get to work.<\/p>\n
Slowly, I walked with Lizzie and learned how to train her to keep pace with me.\u00a0 \u201cOne step at a time,\u201d I said to myself and to her at the same time.\u00a0 I learned how to teach her to respect my command to \u201cstay\u201d while I walked out in front of her, and then around her in a circle.\u00a0 (This, Lesley told me, is what cowboys and girls do to train their horses to stay whenever they have to jump out of the saddle to tend to something\u2026 cows\u2026 fences\u2026 you name it.)<\/p>\n
As often as I could throughout the process, I rewarded Lizzie with carrots and horse treats for a job well done.\u00a0 Reinforcement isn\u2019t just for dogs, I quickly learned.\u00a0 And then, back we went to the barn for a final grooming session.<\/p>\n
There was time for a little energy work, too\u2026 Reiki.\u00a0 Gingerly, I held my palms over Lizzie and focused on passing my energy to her.\u00a0 I know that she was doing the same\u2026 There was healing going on in both directions.<\/p>\n
Then, a few more carrots and it was time to say good-bye.<\/p>\n
I looked into Lizzie\u2019s eyes and she looked into mine.\u00a0 Contact.<\/p>\n
When it was all said and done, did I have some issues that needed tending to?\u00a0 Oh, probably.\u00a0 Even though I couldn\u2019t put them into words at the time.<\/p>\n
But here\u2019s what I can tell you now.\u00a0 When I looked into the eyes of that magnificent creature, and she looked back at me, I knew that we were talking.\u00a0 We were connecting.\u00a0 She was listening to me and I to her.\u00a0 Animal to human, human to animal.\u00a0 Sharing a piece of our souls in a stable with a Garth Brooks song floating out of a transistor radio in the corner.<\/p>\n
Buck Brannaman knows all about this soul connection between horse and human.\u00a0 So do Lesley Hannell and Lizzie.\u00a0 You should go and visit them sometime.\u00a0 And whatever you do, take some carrots with you.<\/p>\n
